CCSK observes October 18, 1948, as historic day of people’s government

The Committee of Civil Societies Kangleipak (CCSK) observed October 18 as “Kangleipak Manipur gi Puwarida Meeyamgi Ahanba Leingak Leikhiba Numit”, commemorating the first sitting of Manipur’s first elected Legislative Assembly on October 18, 1948.

The commemorative programme was held at Citizens’ Club, Soibam Leikai, Wangkhei Khunou, with Wangkhei MLA Thangjam Arunkumar Singh attending as chief guest. CCSK president Jeetendra Ningomba presided over the function.

Among the guests of honour were retired Commissioner R.K. Nimai, Manipur University Law Department head Prof. Y. Premananda, JNIMS Medical Superintendent Prof. Dr. N. Kameshore Singh, Manipur University Associate Professor Thiyam Bharat Singh, Dhanamanjuri University Associate Professor K. Indrakumar Singh, and former Citizens’ Club president M. Gojen Meitei.

Speakers highlighted the historical significance of October 18, 1948, when Manipur’s first elected Legislative Assembly held its inaugural sitting following elections under the Manipur Constitution Act, 1947. They stressed the need to preserve the state’s political history, promote historical awareness among younger generations and recognise the role of public participation in governance.

CCSK general secretary L. Jayenta delivered the welcome address, while organising committee convenor M. Joy presented the keynote address. Organising committee vice-chairman Shyam Khuman delivered the vote of thanks.

In another programme, the Women’s Wing of the Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation (JFD) presented gifts to Citizens’ Club volunteers in recognition of their support during the campaign for updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC). The volunteers had accommodated JFD members at the club premises for over a month during the campaign.

The programme concluded with a call to preserve the historical memory of Manipur’s representative institutions and pass their significance on to future generations.
