Dhaka, July 20: A classmate of killed Manipuri student Ateef Sheikh has been arrested for his suspected involvement with last week’s murder in Chittagong, port city of Bangladesh. Mohammad Kamal, OC of Akbar Shah Police Station said to the Imphal Times, ‘Niraj Guru, who is also from India and lived in the same flat with Ateef, was taken into custody on Wednesday afternoon.’ A Chittagong court later in the day sent him to jail after Niraj was produced before it. Earlier, a case was filed on Tuesday night for the murder. Victim Md Ateef Sheikh’s father Md Abdul Khalek filed the case with Akbar shah police station accusing eight people – Ateef ’s three roommates and five others who went to the apartment for a party – of killing Ateef. Ateef’s father filed the case against Winson Maisnam Singh, Nirash Grum and Jyotsna Devi Tumrong and five other students of University of Science and Technology Chittagong. OC Alamgir said that they were investigating the murder. No plea for his remand was filed on Wednesday, Chittagong Metropolitan Police’s Additional Deputy Commissioner Nirmalendu Bikash Chakrabarty told. He said the remand plea would be submitted after proper procedures needed to interrogate Niraj as he is a foreigner. In the wee hours of Jul 15, according to Niraj, Ateef was found in a bloodied state on the floor of his room that he shared with another Indian student of USTC named Wilson Singh. Wilson was found hanging from the ceiling fan. The police later confirmed that Ateef was murdered with a sharp weapon.
