A candlelight protest was staged as part of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. Members of the Center for Women’s Development, Keishamthong Elangbam Leikai, held the vigil yesterday evening at Keishamthong Elangbam Leikai.
The fortnight-long campaign began on November 25, 2024, and will conclude on December 10, 2024. It was organized under the aegis of the United NGOs Mission Manipur. An awareness program was also held in connection with the observance.
Key speakers at the event included A. Ameeta Devi, President of Keishamthong Elangbam Leikai Meira Paibi; Oinam Likmaleima, Secretary of the same organization; and N. Jeevanmala, President of the Centre for Women’s Development.
During her speech, N. Jeevanmala highlighted the importance of the fortnight observance. She emphasized that the 16 Days of Activism serves as a crucial platform to address and combat the widespread violence endured by women and children. She pointed out that although this issue persists even during times of conflict, it is vital to unite against such atrocities.
She further explained that this campaign raises awareness about resisting the dominance and oppression faced by women and children. The initiative aligns with the United Nations-declared International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, underlining its global significance.
