Amid the ongoing flood and landslide crisis affecting several regions of Manipur, the state’s Directorate of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution (CAF&PD) has announced a firm directive against the hoarding of essential supplies.
Citing powers under the Essential Commodities Act, 1955, the department has barred individuals and businesses—including wholesalers, retailers, and traders—from stockpiling vital goods during this emergency period. The move comes as part of the government’s effort to ensure stable availability of food, medicine, and daily-use items, which have become critical due to widespread disruptions caused by the natural disaster.
The department has warned that any violation of this directive will result in legal consequences. Officials have called on the public to assist in enforcement by reporting instances of hoarding or black-marketing. The order, signed by CAF&PD Director K. Bono Singh, is intended to maintain fair distribution of essential commodities and curb market manipulation during this time of heightened need.
