Imphal, Dec 1:
The Coalition Against Drugs & Alcohol (CADA) marked World AIDS Day today at its Head Office in Pureiromba Khongnang Makhong, Konung Mamang, Imphal East, under the theme, “Take the Rights Path: My Health, My Right.” The event was attended by several prominent community leaders, including Ima Thokchom Ramani, President of the All Manipur Women’s Social Reformation & Development Samaj (Nupi Samaj); Ima Lourembam Nganbi, President of Apunba Manipur Kanba Ima Lup (AMKIL); Ima Yambem Momon, President of the All Manipur Tammi Chingmi Apunba Nupi Lup (TAMMI CHINGMI); MC Rita, President of Leimarol Lamjingkon (LEIMAKON); and Hijam Priyokumar, President of CADA, who served as presidium members for the event.
During his keynote address, CADA Secretary General Geetchandra Mangang highlighted the rising use of drugs in Manipur despite the ongoing conflict in the region. He warned that this growing issue could lead to a surge in HIV/AIDS cases. He further emphasized the difficulties faced by people living with HIV and AIDS, particularly in accessing Antiretroviral Therapy (ART), as the ongoing crisis has severely disrupted healthcare services. Geetchandra also pointed to the economic downturn caused by the conflict, which has led some women to resort to harmful ways of earning a living. Additionally, he criticized the government’s move to legalize alcohol, which he said has contributed to increased alcohol consumption among young people. Geetchandra called for an end to the conflict, urging the community to come together to find solutions for a healthier, safer future.
MC Rita, one of the presidium members, spoke about the alarming rise in HIV infections during the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing crisis. She noted that many Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and NGOs have been unable to carry out preventive work due to the instability in the region. Rita stressed the importance of family members taking responsibility for controlling the spread of HIV and AIDS, urging them to play an active role in protecting the health of their loved ones and the community.
The observance of World AIDS Day by CADA served as a powerful reminder of the challenges faced by individuals living with HIV/AIDS, especially in the context of ongoing conflict, and called for collective action to address these critical health issues.
