Border Security Force (BSF) Director General Praveen Kumar met Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat in Babupara on October 13 to discuss the prevailing law and order situation in Manipur, amid renewed violence that reportedly claimed at least nine lives last week.
Kumar was accompanied by BSF Eastern Command Additional Director General Sumit Sharan and Inspector General Ravi Kant of the BSF Frontier Headquarters (Mizoram and Cachar).
In a social media post, the Chief Minister said the discussions covered the prevailing security situation and preparations for the forthcoming BSF Raising Day celebrations.
Singh also commended the BSF for its service and contribution to maintaining peace, security and effective border management.
The meeting comes against the backdrop of fresh violence in Manipur’s hill districts, where at least nine people were reportedly killed in separate firing incidents on Friday and Saturday. The incidents have heightened concerns over renewed tensions between Kuki and Naga communities.
More than 50 people have reportedly been killed and dozens of houses torched in violence involving the two communities since February this year, adding to the state’s prolonged security crisis.
Manipur had earlier witnessed widespread ethnic violence between the valley-based Meitei community and Kuki-Zo communities in the adjoining hill districts. The conflict still has not been resolved and has claimed more than 300 lives, left 49 people missing and displaced thousands.
