A breast cancer awareness-cum-screening programme was held today at the Thangjing Auditorium of the Manipur Press Club. The programme was jointly organised by AIO Babina Speciality Hospital and the All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union (AMWJU).
Speaking at the programme, Dr. Dhabali Thangjam, CMD of Babina Group of Companies, said cancer is often perceived as a deadly disease, with many people believing that a cancer diagnosis inevitably leads to death. However, he emphasised that cancer can be treated and cured if detected at an early stage.
He highlighted that certain lifestyle habits contribute to the development of cancer and stressed the importance of early diagnosis and timely treatment. He also pointed out that lung cancer is the most common cancer among men, while breast cancer is the most common among women. Colon cancer is another commonly reported form of the disease.
Referring to cancer prevalence in the northeastern region, Dr. Thangjam said Mizoram has the highest cancer incidence, followed by Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur. However, he noted that Manipur’s cancer incidence remains below the national average.
Recalling the challenges faced by people in accessing cancer treatment facilities in the state around six years ago, he said patients had to travel outside Manipur for proper diagnosis and treatment due to the lack of adequate facilities.
Recognising the need for specialised cancer care within the state, Babina Group established AIO Babina Speciality Hospital in collaboration with American Oncology. Dr. Thangjam recounted the journey behind setting up the hospital, stating that considerable effort was required to convince the partners, as Manipur was perceived as a disturbed region by outsiders.
He also highlighted the challenges encountered in establishing the specialised healthcare facility, particularly in finding qualified and experienced manpower.
Following the awareness session, a breast cancer screening camp was conducted as part of the programme.
The inaugural function was attended by EGM president Khogendra Khomdram, AMWJU vice-president Sonia Sorensangbam and Dr. Anil Ayekpam, along with Dr. Dhabali Thangjam, who graced the occasion as dignitaries.
