Book on Demographic Imbalance in Manipur released

A book titled Demographic Imbalance in Manipur: Its Impact and Solution, focusing on concerns arising from population changes in the state, was released at the Manipur Press Club today.
The publication was jointly brought out by the International Peace and Social Advancement and the Kangleipak Students Association. According to the organisers, the book aims to assist informed public discourse on issues related to demographic changes in Manipur and to encourage serious reflection on their long-term implications.
The book is based on papers presented and deliberations held during an expert discussion programme on Manipur’s present situation, organised at Manipur University on July 19, 2025. It includes presentations made by subject experts, moderated discussions, and recorded viewpoints shared during the academic session, compiled into a single volume for wider readership.
The organisers stated that the publication is intended not only to create public awareness on demographic imbalance but also to provide thoughtful analysis that can guide society and policymakers in addressing the issue through informed debate and understanding. The book has been published jointly by the International Peace and Social Advancement and the Kangleipak Students Association with the belief that informed dialogue is essential for safeguarding the future of the state.
Speaking at the release function, Vice Chancellor of Manipur University Professor N. Joykumar said that addressing demographic imbalance in Manipur requires careful and forward-looking policy planning. He observed that the North Eastern Council should play a proactive role in safeguarding Manipur’s collective interests and long-term stability.
Professor N. Joykumar also referred to historical migration patterns after 1951, noting that large-scale settlement of people from outside the state had taken place over the decades. He said that while migration itself should not be viewed negatively, the absence of effective government regulation and public awareness could pose serious challenges to the state’s future.
The book release event was attended by representatives of various civil society organisations, retired professors, and former Indian Administrative Service officers, reflecting broad interest in the subject.
