Imphal, April 20:
The body of Priyaluxmi Devi Khangembam, a 20-year-old woman from Bishnupur district who was found dead under mysterious circumstances in Delhi, was brought home today amid growing demands for a thorough investigation into her death.
The Joint Action Committee (JAC) against the Brutal Killing of Priyaluxmi Devi Khangembam held a press conference at Ngaikhong Siphai in Bishnupur district on Sunday, expressing deep suspicion over the circumstances surrounding the young woman’s demise.
JAC convener Takhellambam Surjit Mangang informed media persons that the Delhi Police recovered Priyaluxmi’s body near Maharani Bagh in the Sunlight Colony police station area of Delhi on April 19, 2025. While the police have reportedly termed the incident a suicide, citing CCTV footage that allegedly shows her jumping from a rooftop, the JAC has rejected this explanation and raised concerns over potential foul play.
“We are not convinced by the suicide theory being floated. There are too many unanswered questions, and we strongly suspect foul play,” said Surjit Mangang. “We urge the authorities to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation.”
The JAC has appealed to Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla and Chief Secretary PK Singh to intervene and ensure a fair probe into the incident. The committee is also pushing for an independent review or second opinion into the investigation, questioning the transparency and credibility of the initial findings.
The death of the young woman has shocked and saddened the local community, with many expressing solidarity with the bereaved family and joining the call for justice. The JAC has also indicated plans to organise further public demonstrations if their demand for a proper investigation is not addressed promptly.
As the bereaved family prepares to perform the last rites, the call for accountability and truth continues to grow louder, with local organisations and civil society urging both state and central authorities to leave no stone unturned in uncovering the facts surrounding Priyaluxmi’s death.
