The Nongshum killings triggered an angry response from residents, who expressed frustration over repeated attacks on civilians and questioned the authorities’ ability to ensure their safety.
In an extraordinary display of public anger, residents brought the bodies of two victims to the entrance of the Chief Minister’s bungalow, seeking immediate intervention and accountability. A police team from Imphal West subsequently took custody of the bodies and transported them to the mortuary at the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS).
Security was tightened around the Chief Minister’s residence following the incident, with movement along the adjoining route restricted. Meanwhile, a large number of people began blocking the road at Khurai Lamlong around noon, adding to the pressure on the authorities to respond to the killings.
The incident has renewed concerns over the safety of civilians in vulnerable areas along the Imphal East–Kangpokpi district boundary, where residents remain exposed to security threats amid continuing tensions.
