‘BJP is the matchstick that burnt Manipur!’ alleges Congress President Kharge

IT News
Imphal, Jan 4:

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has leveled sharp criticism against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP, holding them responsible for the prolonged unrest in Manipur. In a strongly worded post on the social media platform ‘X,’ Kharge accused the BJP of mishandling the situation and pursuing vested interests that have exacerbated the crisis.
“BJP is the matchstick that burnt Manipur!” he wrote, calling for urgent action to address the deteriorating situation in the violence-stricken state.
Kharge highlighted the Prime Minister’s absence from Manipur, noting that his last visit to the state was in January 2022 during an election campaign, despite the violence erupting on May 3, 2023. Over 250 lives have been lost, 60,000 people displaced, and several villages destroyed, as revealed by satellite imagery, he stated.
The Congress leader also criticized the BJP-led state government under Chief Minister N. Biren Singh for its inability to restore peace and stability. While the Chief Minister has expressed regret over the situation, Kharge said this response is inadequate, especially in light of the Prime Minister’s continued inaction.
Referring to recent incidents of violence in Kangpokpi district, Kharge pointed out that a mob attacked the Superintendent of Police, injuring him and setting several police vehicles ablaze. Reports also indicated the involvement of heavily armed militants, which has further intensified tensions in the region.
Kharge reiterated the demands made by the opposition INDIA bloc on December 6, urging the Prime Minister to visit Manipur before the end of 2024, Convene a meeting with representatives of all political parties in Delhi and to personally intervene to resolve the ongoing crisis.
Accusing the BJP of failing to fulfill its constitutional obligations, Kharge referenced the Supreme Court’s observation that it is the government’s primary responsibility to ensure peace and normalcy. He called for immediate and decisive action to alleviate the suffering of the people in Manipur.
