Imphal, Jan 22:

As India marks the 10th anniversary of the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) initiative, various districts in the region have launched celebrations to commemorate a decade of efforts aimed at empowering women and addressing gender imbalance.
In Ukhrul, the celebrations commenced at the DRDA Hall, Mini Secretariat, with a special event organized by the District Administration in collaboration with the ICDS Cell, the One Stop Centre (OSC), and the District Hub for Women Empowerment. Enoli Chonchuirinmayo Luithui Pheiray, Central Administrator of OSC, delivered a keynote address outlining the journey of the scheme, which began in 2015 in response to the declining child sex ratio and gender imbalances in India. Over the last decade, BBBP has evolved into a national movement promoting gender equality, educating and empowering girls, and addressing social challenges. A bike rally was flagged off by Chief Guest Eno. Kajaigai Gangmei, ADM of Ukhrul, to spread awareness, followed by a pledge ceremony.
In Bishnupur, the celebrations were launched at the Conference Hall of the Mini Secretariat Complex. DC Lourembam Bikram administered a pledge, urging the community to eliminate gender-based discrimination and support girl-child education. He emphasized the importance of women-led development, highlighting the shift from women development to empowering women to lead change. The district also planned educational programs, awareness campaigns, and a series of activities culminating on International Women’s Day. A cycle rally and signature campaign were organized as part of the celebrations.
Senapati followed suit with a rally flagged off by Additional Deputy Commissioner Rang David Kung at the Mini Secretariat Complex. The rally, which included slogans such as “She dreams big, let her fly high” and “Every girl has a dream, allow her to fulfill it,” was followed by a cleanliness drive in anticipation of the Minister of State’s visit. Anganwadi workers and district officials participated actively in the event.
In Kangpokpi, a series of activities to mark the 10th anniversary were launched by Deputy Commissioner Mahesh Chaudhari at the District Conference Hall. The District Programme Officer highlighted key events including gender sensitization workshops, menstrual hygiene awareness campaigns, and skill development initiatives. The district also pledged to continue its efforts towards gender equality and the empowerment of girls, with a special focus on meritorious students who would be felicitated during the Republic Day celebrations.
Churachandpur also joined the celebration with an oath-taking ceremony held at the Mini Secretariat. The event, led by Additional Deputy Commissioner Thangboi Gangte, included a signature pledge under the theme “I will Embrace, Empower, Educate every Girl Child, not just Today but Everyday,” in honor of National Girl Child Day.
The BBBP initiative, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2015, has been pivotal in changing the narrative surrounding gender equality in India. Over the past decade, the scheme has evolved into a comprehensive movement, integrating with programs such as Mission Shakti and complementing various government laws aimed at protecting women and ensuring their rights.
The 10-year milestone underscores India’s continued commitment to achieving a gender-equal society, with an emphasis on education, safety, and empowerment for girls. As these celebrations unfold across districts, the collective message remains clear: empowering women is key to building a more inclusive and prosperous nation.
