Dhaka, Sep 21: At least 6 people have been killed and 20 injured after a fire engulfed a textile factory in Munshiganj, near of the Bangladeshi capital, Dhaka yesterday.
Three of the deceased were identified as Nazmul, 20, Israt, 18, and Ujjal, 20.
The incident was reported Wednesday from the factory of Ideal Textile Mill, said police.
Local Police officer Joynal Abedin said, ‘Four fire-fighting units from Munshiganj and Narayanganj are working at the scene to put out the blazes’ The fire left the factory severely damaged, he said.
“A few other workers are still missing, so the death toll may rise.” Abedin said the fire started from the first-floor of the factory building, where chemicals were stored.
“Renovations were going on the same floor, where welders were at work.”
“A spark caused the fire at the chemical warehouse, which spread to other parts soon after,” said the police officer.
According to him, the victims did not die from the fire rather suffocated from the fumes of the chemicals.
Meanwhile, deputy commissioner of Munshiganj, Saila Farzana visited the spot and provided finacial assistance to the victims’ families for their burial.
