Bandh, landslides disrupt vehicle movement along NH-37 and Tongjei Maril Road

IT News
Imphal, Aug 19:

Vehicle movement has come to a standstill along National Highway 37 (NH-37) and Tongjei Maril Road due to an indefinite bandh called by the Rongmei Naga Council Manipur Ntai – Phai Luangrian (Foot Hills) – RNCM-NTL. The total shutdown, which began at midnight on August 18, has led to widespread disruptions as bandh supporters have blocked roads by felling trees, placing boulders, and burning tyres.
The shutdown is aimed at demanding an Alternative Administrative Arrangement for the Noney District’s minority Naga tribes, who are reportedly facing difficulties accessing their district headquarters due to the current administrative setup. The protest has caused all types of vehicles to cease operations on NH-37, which connects Imphal to Jiri, and on Tongjei Maril Road, which links Bisnupur to Khoupum and Rengpang.
In addition to the bandh, the region is experiencing severe weather conditions. Incessant rains have triggered landslides and mudslides between K. Sinam and Sehjang Village in Kangpokpi District along NH-37. Excavation and clearing efforts are hampered by the ongoing bandh, with machinery operators expressing concerns about their safety.
