The election for the Board of Directors of The Manipur Apex Handloom Weavers and Handicrafts Artisans Co-operative Society Ltd. in Paona Bazar, Imphal, has been concluded amidst allegations by some candidates that the election is invalid.
Thangjam Singhajit Singh, Managing Director of AWAS, joined the department on June 26 as per a government order. The Registrar of Cooperative Societies issued an order to hold the election. An order was issued on June 27 to conduct the election by giving a seven-day notification.
Speaking to the media about the opposition raised by some candidates claiming that the election should be rendered invalid, Thangjam Singhajit said “there was a memorandum asking to postpone the election due to flooding. I passed it to the registrar on time. However, they did not give a proper order.”
“I was not given a definitive order as I have to follow the order as MD. There is also a High Court order to conduct the election too,” he stated.
Regarding the allegation raised by some candidates about misuse of the funds, he responded saying “I have no knowledge of the history. I just joined in.” He said, “I have no knowledge of the allegations previous one. I just took charge here.” “There is an allegation that there is misuse of funds. Matters pertaining to financial embezzlement will be looked into when we inquire. Let the law take due course. We will take a look into it,” the Managing Director added. Moreover, “I took the matter as per the order as the election was postponed due to the model code of conduct,” he stated.
The successful candidates who have been elected are Angom Romika Devi with 263 votes, Laishram Anandi Devi with 220 votes, Leimapokpam Barni Devi with 220 votes, L. Billashini Devi with 225 votes, Sougrakpan Bhubol Singh with 226 votes, Waikhom Athoi Devi with 214 votes, and Y. Thambalton Devi with 216 votes.
The other candidates, Anjali Rajkumari, Koijam Sangita Devi, Kshetrimayum Indira Devi, Laishram Kumarjit Singh, Loitongbam Jibonlata Devi, Ningthoujam Ibocha Singh, Phuraillatpam Indira Devi, and W. Madhuri Devi, have not been elected.
The declaration of the results has been formally communicated to the relevant authorities, including the Registrar of Cooperative Societies in Manipur and the Managing Director of AWAS.
