Tension erupted in Mayang Imphal following allegations that police personnel from Kakching district picked up a local auto driver under questionable circumstances, prompting protests from local clubs and women’s groups.
According to Thoudam Bilashini, President of the Mayang Imphal Chabung Company Meira Paibi Apunba, Lourembam Rajkumar alias Abung, son of Lourembam Inaotombi of Chabung Company Makha Leikai, was taken away by police personnel after he had returned home from driving his auto and was preparing to purchase fish. She alleged that the arrest was made without providing any reason or proper identification and described the incident as a blatant case of arbitrary detention.
The incident reportedly occurred at Rajkumar’s residence, triggering strong reactions from local organizations. A sit-in protest was staged near his home by members of the KUCMA Mayang Imphal along with various clubs and meira paibi groups. Protesters demanded immediate clarification from the authorities and condemned what they called an unlawful act by the police.
During the protest, Thoudam Bilashini stated that Lourembam Rajkumar was not involved in any illegal activity and was simply earning a living through honest means. She further claimed that another unidentified individual from the locality was also allegedly taken away around the same time.
The Meira Paibi leader criticized the manner in which the police conducted the operation, calling it threatening to public safety and peace. “If police continue such acts without accountability, how can ordinary citizens live without fear?” she questioned.
