Assam Rifles foils smuggling of timber worth crores in Chandel

Chandel Battalion of 26 Sector Assam Rifles under aegis of IGAR (S) foiled timber smuggling attempt in Libong-Duthang Junction yesterday.
The troops recovered a large quantity of smuggled goods/timber(Burma Teak Wood planks) and apprehended 08 smugglers close to Libong-Duthang Y Junction.
Acting on specific information regarding smuggling of timber across the Indo-Myanmar border into Chandel, at 02:40 A.M a team intercepted four Shaktiman trucks. On thorough checking, timber worth Rs 1.32 Crore was recovered and eight smugglers were apprehended.
The smuggled timber alongwith smugglers and vehicles were handed over to DFO Chandel for further legal action.
Meanwhile, Thoubal Battalion of 9 Sector Assam Rifles under the aegis of HQ IGAR (South) apprehended three persons from Saram village of Thoubal district on yesterday.
On receiving a specific input regarding move of contraband items along Thoubal–Hongi axis, troops of Assam Rifles established a Mobile vehicle check post in Saram and apprehended three suspected smugglers alongwith two Tata trucks loaded with 13 logs of teak wood and one truck loaded with 94 blocks of teak wood.
The apprehended persons have been identified as Lourembam Ito Singh, Md Shafiq and Roustom Khan residents of Thoubal district.
The seized timber and persons have been handed over to DFO Kasom Khullen for further legal action.
