Asian Games gold medallists Sushila, Bichu felicitated

Manipur hockey players Pukhrambam Sushila Chanu and Kharibam Bichu Devi, members of the Indian women’s hockey team that won the Asian Games gold medal in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, were accorded a warm reception by family members, supporters and well-wishers at Imphal International Airport today.

Members of Hockey Manipur and supporters gathered at the airport to welcome the two players on their return to the state.

Sushila’s mother, Pukhrambam Lata Devi, expressed pride over the achievement, noting that the gold was India’s first in women’s hockey at the Asian Games.

Sushila, who hails from Hijam Dewan Leikai in Thangmeiband, said the triumph after a 44-year wait was the result of the collective efforts of her family, coaches and supporters in Manipur and across the country.

She also called for improved hockey infrastructure in Manipur, saying that apart from Khuman Lampak Main Stadium and the SAI Sports Complex, the state has limited facilities. More hockey complexes, she said, could help encourage more youngsters to take up the sport.

Sushila urged young athletes to remain committed to their goals, recalling that she continued her career despite suffering injuries on three occasions.

Bichu Devi, who hails from Charangpat in Thoubal district, said the team’s success followed nearly six months of intensive training. She described the victory over China and qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics as major milestones.
