Asem Bhakta Singh, a photojournalist with Hyderabad Headlines, has been elected as the new President of the All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union (AMWJU) for the 2025–2027 term. The election was held on Thursday at the Manipur Press Club, Imphal, with participation from union members.
Asem Bhakta secured 192 votes, defeating Bijoy Kakchingtabam, Associate Editor of Poknapham daily, who garnered 144 votes. The win was sealed with a margin of 48 votes.
In the same election, eight journalists were elected to the AMWJU Standing Committee. Elangbam Ojitkumar Singh (Musuk), a reporter with Impact TV, received the highest number of votes at 229, followed by Konthoujam Gita Devi of Imphal Times with 198 votes, and Thingbaijam Lakhikanta Singh of Paojel with 190. Poknapham senior reporter Sonia Sorensangbam secured 158 votes, while Leimapokpam Shanjitkumar Singh (Bhakta) of Eikhogi Panthung received 157. Haobam Pravinkumar Singh of Ichel Express received 156 votes, ISTV News senior reporter Khwairakpam Naoba Singh got 155, and Suraj Chanam Singh of Kangleipakki Meira obtained 136 votes.
Out of 370 registered AMWJU members, 346 exercised their voting rights. The certificates of election were formally handed over to the newly elected president and standing committee members by the Returning Officer.
