The All Naga Traders Association Manipur (ANTAM) has announced plans to impose an indefinite economic blockade on National Highway No. 2 (the Senapati to Imphal road), set to take effect at midnight on October 8, unless the state government takes action to address the increasing incidents of illegal tax collection and harassment faced by businesses, transporters, and truckers across the state, particularly along the Kangpokpi to Imphal route.
These unlawful practices have become prevalent, exacerbated by the state government’s apparent indifference to the community’s struggles. This troubling trend has led to threats against truck drivers, who are being extorted under the pretext of ensuring their safety, according to an ANTAM press release.
Despite numerous complaints from affected parties, these illegal activities continue unabated, causing significant distress within the trading community. The Committee of Tribal Unity (COTU) has been persistently demanding unauthorized fees at checkpoints, targeting trucks carrying goods as well as those returning empty after offloading, all under the guise of soliciting donations, the press release added.
ANTAM has actively sought to address these urgent issues, working to maintain a steady supply of essential goods and services to the valley region. The association has urged the state government to take immediate measures to eradicate these illegal practices and ensure the safety and security of truckers and the broader business community.
