All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union (AMWJU) while condemning the malicious and offensive statement against Imphal Free Press Journalist posted by Soubam Nongpoknganba , a BJP Manipur Pradesh state executive and convenor (Law and Legal Affairs Vibhak) of state BJP unit , at social networking site ‘Facebook’ , has demanded immediate public apology failing which, the Journalist body threatens legal action against him.
As per a statement of the AMWJU, the genesis of the case was triggered after a news report christened “Biren Misleading Public” appeared in the May 29, 2018 edition of the Imphal Free Press at which Paojel Chaoba is also a member of the editorial board.
The story was not a by-line story and Soubam Nongpoknganba has nothing to do in dragging Chaoba in the scene even as Chaoba stands by the report being a member of the editorial board.
Paojel Chaoba himself had requested the BJP leader to take down the post as it malign his image.
AMWJU in the statement said that the Union has no objection in making a rejoinder or holding a press conference by the state unit BJP if the political party felt it aggrieved and injured by the report.
“The manner in which Nongpoknganba made in his statement tantamount to malice, infringement and assassinating the personal liberty and character of  Chaoba. Such statement has also attacked and breached the independence of media”, the AMWJU statement said.
The AMWJU also stated that the matter will be taken to the Press Council of India as well as to the Indian Journalists’ Union New Delhi and also to the All Manipur Bar Association for doing the needful.
