AMWJU condemns attack to reporters by Bandh supporters

Imphal, Sept 19:

The All Manipur Working Journalists Union (AMWJU) expresses its strong condemnation of the mistreatment of journalists while carrying out their duties today at Thongju Beni Leirak and other areas in Imphal East and West districts. In a press release, AMWJU stated that it is deeply regrettable that reporters, who are working diligently to gather news, are being obstructed and physically assaulted by supporters of the Bandh at Thongju Beni Leirak. Despite AMWJU’s repeated appeals to refrain from obstructing journalists, it is unfortunate that such hindrances persist.
Earlier today, at around 10:20 am, supporters of the 48-hour General Strike, called in response to the arrest of 5 Village Defenders, physically assaulted a reporter from IS COM by forcefully pushing on his neck at Thongju Beni Leirak. Furthermore, in various locations in Imphal East and West, reporters were subjected to humiliation through the use of inappropriate language.
AMWJU urges individuals to examine documents, if suspicious, and to hand them over to the relevant authorities or to AMWJU officials if the documents are indeed questionable.
