The All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union (AMWJU) and the Editors Guild Manipur (EGM) have announced the withdrawal of the ongoing agitation in connection with the Gwaltabi incident of May 20, 2025. The decision was taken after a joint meeting of AMWJU and EGM held on Saturday at the Manipur Press Club, following assurances and actions initiated by the authorities.
The press bodies stated that the Governor of Manipur had assured a fair inquiry into the incident, which led to the constitution of a two-member Inquiry Committee. The Committee submitted its report on June 13, 2025, and the Government of Manipur has officially communicated to AMWJU and EGM that its recommendations have been accepted. Directives have also been issued to concerned departments and security agencies to prevent recurrence of such incidents.
While calling off the agitation, AMWJU and EGM expressed cautious optimism, making it clear that the journalist community would remain vigilant. They reiterated that the safety and dignity of media persons are non-negotiable and warned that any failure to implement the recommendations of the Inquiry Committee would result in renewed democratic actions by the press bodies.
The two organisations also extended their gratitude to colleagues, civil society groups, and the people of Manipur for their solidarity and support in safeguarding press freedom and accountability.
