AMUCO, sister organisations condemn killing of civilians

Five civil society organisations have strongly condemned the killing of civilians and injuries reportedly caused during an incident at Khongbal Sunurok Tangkhul under Sagolmang Police Station on October 19.

In a joint press release issued on Tuesday, the All Manipur United Clubs’ Organisation (AMUCO), All Manipur Women’s Voluntary Association (AMAWOVA), Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibee Apunba Manipur (PLMPAM), Committee on Human Rights (COHR), Manipur, and Manipuri Students’ Federation (MSF) alleged that the incident was part of a broader attempt to destabilise Manipur by fuelling communal divisions through proxy armed groups.

The organisations expressed concern over the continued attacks on civilians and alleged human rights violations in the state. They also questioned how armed groups allegedly equipped with sophisticated weapons could continue targeting civilians despite the presence of security forces.

Demanding immediate action, the organisations called for the arrest of those involved, strict punishment for the perpetrators and the dismantling of what they described as proxy armed groups operating in Manipur.

They warned that failure to ensure justice and initiate meaningful dialogue could lead to a larger public movement. They also urged the authorities to take immediate measures to protect civilians and safeguard their lives and livelihoods.
