The All Manipur United Clubs’ Organisation (AMUCO) and Thangmeiband United Club (TUC) jointly observed the “1891 Manipur National War Memorial Day – 23rd April” at the memorial site located at Cheiraoching, Thangmeiband. This solemn occasion paid tribute to the brave men and women who sacrificed their lives during the historic Anglo-Manipur War of 1891.
Floral tributes were laid at the memorial, and a moment of remembrance was held in honour of those who fought for Manipur’s freedom. The gathering reflected on the historic significance of the war and the selfless sacrifices made by the people of Manipur in the face of colonial aggression.
The ceremony was marked by a moving speech delivered by AMUCO President Pheiroijam Nando Luwang. In his address, Luwang emphasized the importance of remembering the sacrifices of the past and the indomitable spirit of the freedom fighters who resisted colonial rule. He noted that the legacy of those who fought in the 1891 war should not be viewed merely as a chapter in history, but as a continuing source of inspiration for the present generation.
Luwang pointed out that the sacrifices made during the Anglo-Manipur War were not just about physical resistance, but also about the cultural and political integrity of the people of Manipur. He urged the people of the state to reflect on the values of courage, unity, and resilience that the martyrs embodied, and to use these ideals as guiding principles in their daily lives.
During his speech, Luwang also called on the youth to carry forward the spirit of resistance and resilience. He urged them to learn from the history of their ancestors, ensuring that the lessons from the past continue to inspire them in their quest for justice and self-determination. He stressed the importance of standing together as a community to safeguard the identity and sovereignty of Manipur, which has long been shaped by the courage of its people.
The event was attended by a wide range of civil society organizations, leaders, and community members. Participants gathered in procession, paid their respects to the memorial, and reaffirmed their commitment to uphold the values of peace, unity, and justice for Manipur.
