AMSU Vice-President Prikeshwor Moirangthem calls for collective efforts to resolve Manipur crisis

All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU) Vice-President Prikeshwor Moirangthem has called upon students and the younger generation to shoulder collective responsibility in addressing the ongoing crisis in Manipur and safeguarding the identity, land, language, culture and history of its indigenous people.

He made the appeal while attending the Manipuri Students’ Freshers’ Meet 2026, organised by the Assam Manipuri Students’ Union (AAMSU), Silchar District Committee, and the AAMSU Gurucharan University Unit under the aegis of the AAMSU Central Committee at Rajib Bhawan, Silchar, Assam, today.

Speaking at the programme, Prikeshwor said the Freshers’ Meet should not be treated merely as a celebratory occasion. Instead, it should provide an opportunity for students to exchange ideas, broaden their knowledge and, more importantly, reflect on their responsibilities towards society.

He observed that Manipur has remained engulfed in an unprecedented crisis since May 3, 2023, with no lasting solution in sight. He stressed that students, as the future of society, must also play an active role in finding a way forward.

He called for a deeper understanding of the circumstances that led to the crisis and urged people to critically examine the measures undertaken by both the State and Central governments to restore normalcy. He said public assurances and commitments made by the governments must be translated into concrete action.

Expressing concern over the continued use of weapons by several Kuki-Zo armed groups operating under the Suspension of Operations (SoO) arrangement, he alleged that the Central Government had failed to take adequate action despite the concerns and aspirations of the people.

He further cautioned against attempts to undermine Manipur’s collective identity, unity and strength, as well as the bonds of peaceful coexistence among its different communities.

Prikeshwor also emphasised that protecting the people should remain the foremost responsibility of any government. He urged students not to remain passive spectators amid the prevailing crisis but to come forward and contribute towards safeguarding the collective interests of society.

Calling for unity beyond differences and disagreements, he appealed to students to stand in solidarity with families affected by the violence, internally displaced persons and students facing difficulties in pursuing their education.

He reiterated the need for collective efforts to protect the identity, land, language, culture and history of the indigenous people of Manipur and urged everyone to remain steadfast in defending their rights.

The programme was organised under the theme, “The Sacrifice of Students Today is the Foundation of Tomorrow’s Society.”

Among those who attended the programme were AAMSU Silchar District Committee Vice-President Roshan Lukram, AMSU Vice-President Prikeshwor Moirangthem, AAMSU Central Committee Vice-President Omkar Samulailatpam, AAMSU Adviser Satyajit Laishram, senior physician Dr Nandababu Singha and Assistant Professor of Nehru College, Pailapool, Dr Merina Sagapam, among others.
