AMSU Observes 46th Realisation Day, adopts key resolutions

All Manipur Students’ Union marked its 46th Realisation Day (Meekap Thokpa Numit) on Friday with a tribute ceremony, rally and public meeting, adopting a series of resolutions on demographic and policy concerns.
The programme at Singjamei Chinga Mathak Pishum Ground began with the hoisting of the AMSU flag by president Lukram Malangba, followed by floral tributes to student martyrs Potshangbam Premananda and Huidrom Lokendro, who were killed during the “Go Back Foreigner” movement on April 17, 1980.
A mass rally involving students, civil society organisations and community leaders proceeded from Pishum Chingamacha hillock to Manipur Dramatic Union Hall at Yaiskul Police Lane, where a public meeting was held.
During the meeting, participants adopted resolutions addressing illegal immigration, demographic changes and related policy issues. The gathering endorsed recommendations made by experts during earlier discourses in Imphal, focusing on identification, detection and deportation of illegal immigrants, as well as issues linked to Census 2027, delimitation and updating of the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
The resolutions urged the Central and State governments to initiate detection and deportation processes within April 2026, warning of democratic agitation in case of inaction. The Centre was also urged to take steps to safeguard indigenous communities, including considering temporary relocation arrangements if deportation faces constraints.
The gathering further called for setting up an expert committee to examine Census, delimitation and NRC-related issues, and recommended that any future census be conducted only after updating the NRC or adopting an appropriate mechanism.
Citing the Sarbananda Sonowal vs Union of India judgment, the participants sought intervention of the Centre under Article 355 and called for postponement of the 2027 Census in Manipur until completion of a comprehensive NRC update.
