AMSU alleges irregular appointment of 26 Assistant Professors at Kumbi College

The All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU) has alleged large-scale irregularities in the appointment of 26 Assistant Professors at Kumbi College in 2025, stating that the recruitment process was carried out in violation of prescribed norms and guidelines.
Speaking to media persons Secretary General of AMSU, Salam Changkhonba said that under its “Campaign for Total Education” initiative aimed at promoting quality education, AMSU stated that Kumbi College, a Government-aided institution established on September 27, 1981 through the collective efforts of local residents, currently receives recurring grant-in-aid from the Government of Manipur. Despite this, the union alleged that the appointment of 26 Assistant Professors in 2025 was made without issuing proper advertisement, without conducting a duly constituted Selection Committee or Departmental Promotion Committee, and without adhering to the guidelines of the University Grants Commission.
According to AMSU, a teaching staff list published by the Principal of the college on November 24, 2025 included the names of the 26 Assistant Professors who were shown as having been appointed and joined during the year. However, the union alleged that no transparent recruitment process was followed. It further claimed that three non-teaching staff members serving as Lower Division Clerk, Laboratory Assistant and Laboratory Attendant were among those appointed as Assistant Professors.
The union alleged that the appointments were influenced by personal relationships and affiliations, and were made without following Recruitment Rules, public advertisement procedures, or mandatory selection processes. It described the matter as a serious case of corruption and nepotism.
AMSU also pointed out that the Governing Body of Kumbi College includes two nominees from Manipur University and one nominee from the Directorate of University and Higher Education, Government of Manipur. However, it alleged that these nominees were not informed about the appointments.
Demanding immediate intervention, AMSU urged the Government to take appropriate action against those responsible and to cancel the appointments made in violation of rules.
It further called for fresh recruitment to be conducted strictly in accordance with established procedures through a properly constituted selection committee.
Stating that teachers play a vital role in shaping students and society, AMSU appealed that appointments to teaching posts must strictly follow prescribed norms to ensure that only qualified and deserving candidates are selected.
