As the world prepares to commemorate International Workers’ Day on May 1st, the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) Manipur has drawn attention to the persistent challenges faced by the labour community in the state. Speaking to reporters at Irabot Bhawan in Imphal, AITUC General Secretary L. Sotinkumar underscored the pressing issues confronting workers amidst the ongoing crisis.
Sotinkumar emphasized that the hardships endured by laborers in Manipur cannot be overlooked, particularly in light of the challenges exacerbated by the current situation.
He highlighted that May Day celebrations for laborers are traditionally organized under the auspices of the All India Youth Federation in Manipur, tracing the historical significance of the day back to 1939 when Late Lamyanba Irabot first celebrated it in the state.
“This year marks the 135th May Day celebration, scheduled to be held at THAU ground. However, we must remain mindful of the events of last year, particularly the conflicts and violence that erupted on May 3rd in Manipur. It is imperative that we preserve Manipur’s identity and extend assistance to those displaced by the conflicts, facilitating their return to their homes,” remarked Sotinkumar, stressing the need to prioritize the welfare of the state.
Expressing grave concerns over the nearly 11-month conflict, Sotinkumar lamented the government’s failure to ensure the safety of drivers on key National Highways such as Imphal-Dimapur, Imphal-Jiribam, Imphal-Moreh, and Imphal-Churachandpur.
“Numerous drivers have tragically lost their lives on these highways. Consequently, we have repeatedly called for the establishment of a Highway Protection Force to safeguard their security. Regrettably, the state government has disregarded our demands, neglecting to address them in cabinet and assembly meetings or advocate for them at the central level,” added Sotinkumar, highlighting the urgent need for action to protect the lives and livelihoods of workers in Manipur.
