After the success of Mao Market, Imphal is set to witness the establishment of Liangmei Market in the coming days. Nongthombam Sanajaoba, convenor of the Liangmei Imphal Market Committee, announced that the committee will be formally constituted on September 16 at Tera Ideal Club. He was speaking to media persons at Thangjing Hall of Manipur Press Club.
Sanajaoba said that the Liangmei, an indigenous tribe of Manipur and one of the seven clans, have initiated the market to promote and sell vegetables and other crops produced in the hill areas. The committee will comprise nine members drawn from various civil society organisations of Imphal.
He further stated that the decision to form the committee was taken after a series of discussions with Liangmei organisations and CSOs, who had earlier explored four to five possible locations in Imphal. A meeting held at Imphal Hotel finalised the formation of the committee.
Highlighting that the initiative goes beyond mere economics, Sanajaoba said the Liangmei Market seeks to foster closer ties and emotional integrity between communities of the hill and valley through a shared marketplace.
The market is scheduled to begin functioning from September 16, and Liangmei farmers will bring in fresh agricultural produce directly from the hills on the inaugural day. Sanajaoba appealed to the people of the state to extend their support to the initiative.
