Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) 1958 can be repealed from Manipur by bringing about a political solution. This was stated by MP Dr. T. Meinya reflecting on the burning issue which is on the verge of morphing into civil unrest. It may be mentioned that Dr. Hamid Ansari, Vice President of India have also opined in support of removing the draconian law according to the recommendation of National Conference on Indigenous People for Jammu & Kashmir. MP Meinya also assured of sparing no personal and official effort if the state government takes the initiative for repealing the much reviled and controversial act which he termed as archaic and unnecessary. Answering to a query on the present situation being experienced in the national capital by people from the north east, especially the student community, he said that the people from the north east still could not shake off the feeling of being treated as different, while most of the people from mainland India cannot accept the people from the north east region of the country who are physically and culturally different as fellow citizens. In an effort to remedy the situation, special measures has been taken up including the appointment of a liaison police officer at every police station in the city and opening of a helpline for putting up complaints and grievances by people from the north eastern states the MP added.
