Additional hardships burden IDPs as companies and banks threaten to seize vehicles

IT News
Imphal, July 23:

Internally displaced people (IDPs) in Manipur are facing additional hardships as companies and banks have started threatening to seize their vehicles due to non-payment of EMIs. Many IDPs, whose businesses have been frozen since the outbreak of violence on May 3, 2023, are unable to meet their financial obligations. Despite a moratorium period of 11 months granted earlier, the continued violence, now in its fourteenth month, has left them homeless and jobless.
The ongoing crisis has devastated the livelihoods of countless families, forcing them to abandon their homes and seek refuge in safer areas. An IDP, expressing their plight, said, “How do we pay the EMI of the loan when we have no source of income? The government should extend the moratorium until the end of the crisis.”
The prolonged violence has exacerbated the financial strain on these displaced individuals. Initially, banks and financial institutions provided a temporary relief period, but as the unrest continues unabated, the pressure to resume payments has mounted. The threat of asset seizure adds to the already overwhelming burden faced by those struggling to survive amidst the chaos.
Community leaders and advocacy groups are urging the government to intervene and extend the moratorium on loan repayments. They argue that without such measures, the economic recovery of the affected population will be severely hampered, further prolonging their distress.
The situation remains dire as the violence shows no signs of abating, and the displaced people of Manipur continue to seek relief and stability in an increasingly uncertain environment.
