A Journey of Courage and Reconciliation:  MLA Khemchand walks the path of peace in IDP Relief Camp in Litan

Ukhrul, December 8:
In an extraordinary gesture of courage, goodwill, and statesmanship, Ex-Minister of RD & PR, Yumnam Khemchand Singh, on Monday embarked on a rare and historic peace mission to Ukhrul and Kamjong districts—regions he described as “the heartbeat of Manipur’s hope for unity.” His visit marks the first by an elected Meitei representative to the Litan Sareikhong IDP Relief Camp in Ukhrul since the tragic violence of May 3, 2023, a moment that has since shaped the socio-political landscape of the state.
Upon reaching Litan, Khemchand engaged in heartfelt interaction with Kuki villagers at the local bazaar, breaking symbolic barriers that have for months hindered meaningful communication between communities. He then proceeded to the Litan Sareikhong IDP Relief Camp, home to around 505 displaced persons, many of whom have been living in uncertainty and longing for home for nearly three years.
Addressing the inmates, Khemchand delivered a soul-stirring message anchored in forgiveness, unity, and hope.
“Because of the ongoing conflict and restricted movement, our development has halted and our younger generation is at risk. With Christmas approaching, this is the time for all communities to come together. Let us forgive, forget, and rebuild Manipur with peace and equal development for all,” he said.
He also expressed deep appreciation for the Tangkhul community, acknowledging their efforts to preserve channels of communication and harmony amid one of the most challenging periods in Manipur’s recent history.
Continuing his grassroots approach, Khemchand and his team stopped for morning tea at a modest roadside bamboo tea stall run by a Kuki woman—an act small in appearance but large in message: peace begins with ordinary moments shared among people.
At the relief camp, Nehpu Khongsai from S. Bongjang Village voiced the collective yearning for normalcy.
“It has been almost three years since we took shelter here. We are weary and long to return home. We are deeply grateful for the MLA’s visit and his Christmas assistance,” he said.
Khemchand was accompanied by notable leaders including Hopingson A. Shimray, former TNL President and BJP candidate for 43-Phungyar AC; Mark Luithing, former Caretaker Chairman of ADC Ukhrul; and BJP workers from Ukhrul and Phungyar. Shimray praised the initiative as a “long-cherished dream” that signals the beginning of renewed efforts to heal fractured relationships.
“Somewhere we have to start. With Christmas approaching, this is the right moment to spread love and unity among all communities,” he affirmed.
As a seasoned BJP leader, former Speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly, and current MLA of Singjamei, Yumnam Khemchand Singh reaffirmed his commitment to carry this mission of peace across Manipur. His peace team later proceeded to Chassad in Kamjong, aiming to strengthen trust ahead of Christmas so that the festive season may unfold in harmony.
