Special Correspondent
Ukhrul, Aug 16:

The Tangkhul community from across the region came together on Wednesday to celebrate the 78th Naga Independence Day at the Ukhrul headquarters, Wino Tang. This day, observed annually on August 14, holds profound historical significance for the Naga people, marking their long-standing struggle for self-determination and the preservation of their cultural identity since 1947. The celebrations were not confined to Ukhrul alone but resonated across Naga regions, including Manipur, Nagaland, and Arunachal Pradesh.
The event was spearheaded by Qr. Sword Vashum, President of the Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL), the apex body of Tangkhul civil society organizations, who served as the chief guest and hoisted the Naga flag. The gathering also featured a speech by Ato Kilonser Th. Muivah, which was read out by Eno. Sayai, CAO, WTR.
A grand march-past involving 18 schools and 36 contingents from across Ukhrul headquarters highlighted the unity and spirit of the Naga people as they marched in solidarity to commemorate their journey toward freedom.
The significance of the NSCN-IM’s ceasefire agreement with the Government of India, signed on August 1, 1997, was also underscored during the celebration. This ceasefire marked the beginning of formal peace negotiations that eventually led to the historic Framework Agreement on August 3, 2015.
Reflecting on the arduous journey of the Naga people from 1918 to 2024, TNL President Sword Vashum acknowledged the sacrifices made in their quest for identity recognition and freedom, driven by a deep love for Nagalim.
The event was attended by prominent figures, including CAO, WTR, battalion commanders from Tangkhul regions of NSCN, members of civil society organizations, pastors, reverends, and various leaders of the Naga community. The presence of different ranks of the Naga Army and well-wishers further emphasized the significance of the day.
