74th Death Anniversary of Lamyamba Hijam Irabot observed

The 74th death anniversary of social reformer Lamyamba Hijam Irabot was solemnly observed today at the Manipur Press Club, with members of the Protection & Preservation Committee Manipur (PPCM) and the Lamyamba Irabot Ningsing Thouram Observation Committee (LINTOC) leading the commemorations. Dignitaries, committee advisors, and members paid heartfelt homage to the multifaceted leader, who had gone underground in protest against the proposed formation of Purbachal Pradesh, encompassing Manipur, Tripura, Cachar, and Lushai Hills.
Oinam Premjit, Convenor of PPCM, described Irabot as a pioneer who excelled as a sportsperson, journalist, dramatist, and patriot. He urged the people of Manipur to not only remember Irabot but also follow his ideals, emphasizing that the state’s progress depends on embracing the values he championed.
L. Shyam Khuman, Convenor of LINTOC, highlighted Irabot’s sacrifices, noting that he went underground on September 21, 1948, despite being an elected MLA. Khuman stressed that commemorating anniversaries alone is insufficient unless society adopts Irabot’s vision of equality, justice, and social reform.
The observance, themed “Mannaba khunai amagidamak Lamyamba Irabot”, featured candle-lighting, heartfelt floral tributes, keynote addresses, and interactive discussions on his enduring relevance. Presidium members, including K. Thoiba Meetei, Kh. Gopen Luwang, and Y. Tiken Singh, reflected on Irabot’s historical and contemporary significance, inspiring attendees to uphold his legacy of service and justice.
