7 top opposition leaders of Bangladesh get anticipatory bail

The High Court of Bangladesh has granted anticipatory bail to seven top Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), an opposition party leaders, including its Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir. The case was filed at Hatirjheel Police station on charges  of preventing police from carrying out their duties and “instigating subversive activities” on October 1. 

The High Court bench of Justices Muhammad Abdul Hafiz and Kashefa Hossain passed the order after the BNP leaders appeared before the court, to plead for bail, on Wednesday.

The other BNP leaders accused in the case are – BNP Standing Committee members Nazrul Islam Khan, Mirza Abbas, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan, as well as BNP vice-chairmen Amanullah Aman and Ruhul Kuddus Talukder.

Barrister Moudud Ahmed, Advocate Zainul Abedin, and Barrister Mahabub Uddin Khokon represented the BNP leaders.

Zainul Abedin said the court granted the defendants bail for four weeks—until the submission of the charge sheet of the case.

On Monday, police filed a case against 55 BNP leaders, including: Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Moudud Ahmed, Mirza Abbas, and Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury.
