Imphal, Aug 27:

Six houses belonging to both Meitei and Kuki communities located at New Checkon in Imphal East district were burnt today. A team of fire brigade rushed to the site and extinguished the fire before it spread to other houses.
Cause of the burning could not be known at the moment, however, Meira Paibis of the area points finger to the Kuki community who have been staying in the area under heavy security arrangements. BSF and CRPF have been deployed in the area since the outbreak of the violence on May 3.
Secretary of New Chekon Bazar Women’s Society Nongpok Ingkhol, while talking to the media said that those Kuki people who have been staying in the New Checkon area intentionally burnt the houses to blame the Meitei people. She said that the area has been well guarded by the security forces.
With the burning of the houses, tension runs high in Checkon area. Police have to fire tear gas shells to disperse the crowd.
