Kh. Phajaton, representative of Association for Integration and Sustainable Development in Burundi and U Jenison, representative of Indigenous People of Africa Coordinating Committee has called on the UN Human Rights Council to held Government of India Accountable for the ongoing violence in Manipur and for not able to protect its citizen in Manipur” during the General Debate Item No 8 on the follow-up to and implementation of the Vienna Declaration and Programme of Action on Friday.
In his speech Kh. Phajaton has stated that the Government of India failed to protect and provide necessary care to the people of Manipur, the state which is burning since the 3rd of May, 2023 due to the ethnic clash. More than 22,000 children are at the relief camps with no proper education facilities and other recreational activities and at the same time pregnant women, lactating mother, adolescent girls, elderly people and person with disabilities are suffering the most, he said.
Drawing the attention the UN Human Rights Council, Phajaton said that Children were burnt alive, bed ridden aged people and person with disabilities were burnt alive inside their houses and serious attention from this council is needed to question the accountability of the Government of India on the failure to protect its citizen. It’s been 5 months and no proper action from the government to stop the violence in the state of Manipur.
“The mentality of Excessive Militarising to curb the violence is not the ultimate solution but revealing the fact of the failure in governance and its failure undermining the voice of the people. Therefore, it clearly indicates that the Government of India has failed to implement the Vienna Declaration and Program of Action. We request the council to communicate with India to provide special protection for women, children, people with disabilities and elderly person at this time of conflict in Manipur and to explore the mechanisms to make Government of India accountable of the ongoing violence in Manipur.
U. Jenison drew the attention of council regarding the heinous atrocities committed by the Indian Armed Forces towards the unarmed students and peoples of Manipur.
“Our motherland Manipur has been burning since the 3rd of May, 2023 killing more than 200 people including women and children, displacing more than 60000 peoples and more than 5000 houses being burnt down. Concerning the same the implementation of Veinna Declaration and Program of Action by Indian Union is far beyond”, Jenison told the International forum.
He said that the community of Meitei and Kuki are on the battle field slaughtering each other not even sparing elderly people, person with disabilities and children. The hatred has gone to that extent that neither Meitei nor Kuki can cross to their dominant areas. More than 50 people are reported to be missing and unclaimed lifeless bodies of both the communities are still lying in mortuary or other firing sites since the last 5 months and their rituals could not be performed.
