2015 landslide and flood victim still yet to get compensation; protest rally staged

Chandel, Aug. 7: Large number of people staged a protest rally at Chakpikarong Sub-Divisional Headquarter demanding fair compensation for 2015 landslide and flood victims on Saturday.
At least 20 people including women and children were killed in landslide caused by heavy rain at Joumol village of Chandel district in August 2015. Many were left homeless due flood at Chakpikarong area due to heavy rains.
Chakpikarong and Khengjoy Sub-Divisional Chiefs’ Association & Grievances Forum which organized the mass rally denounced state government indifferent attitude towards the people of the area by not releasing the relief fund sanction by the central government.
The rally started from Chakpikarong Keithel and proceeded toward the Office of Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) Chakpikarong by holding placards and raising slogans against the State Government.
The protestors later submitted memorandums addressed to Chief Minister of the State and Union Home Minister through Memi Mary, SDO Chakpikarong.
Speaking at the sideline of the rally, BD Monising Anal, President Chakpikarong & Khengjoy Sub-Divisional Chiefs’ Association & Grievances Forum told media persons that the rally was organized in protest against non-payment of compensation to the landslide and flood affected victims of 2015.
Even though the Central Government released the relief fund, the natural calamities victims of Chakpikarong and Khengjoy Sub-Division, the affected people has not received any compensation till date as the state government failed to release it, he added.
Demanding for early disbursement of the compensation, Monising Anal further warned that the people of the two Sub-divisions will launch series of intense agitation if the state government fails to release the relief fund within 10 days.
