The 14 Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) spearheading the demand for updating the NRC with 1951 as the base year have appealed for greater unity and coordination among organisations and community leaders.
In a press release, Convenor of the IPR Sub-Committee, H. Babulu, alleged that some CSOs were spreading misleading information about the 14 CSOs and their allied organisations, and urged them to refrain from creating confusion among the public.
The release said the ongoing movement was a people’s movement aimed at protecting the identity and rights of the indigenous population. It recalled the June 8 public march held under the slogan “No NRC Update, No Census”, stating that the resolutions adopted during the march were being pursued.
The 14 CSOs also defended their efforts to engage Central leaders in Delhi, saying the outreach was aimed at conveying the aspirations of the people of Manipur and securing wider support, rather than pursuing partisan politics.
The organisations further said legal, democratic and diplomatic approaches would continue to be pursued, while stressing that greater unity and cooperation among different organisations were essential to achieving the objective of NRC updation.
