The lecture, held at the Conference Hall of the Department of Commerce, Manipur, was centered on the theme, “National Register of Citizens (NRC): Prospects and Challenges in the North Eastern States.”
The principal speaker at the event was Professor Romesh Chandra Borpatra Gohain, Former Advocate General of Assam and Former Dean of the Faculty of Law, Guwahati University. A close associate of the late Prof. N. Sanajaoba, Professor Gohain delivered a comprehensive lecture addressing the complexities surrounding illegal immigration and the challenges in implementing the NRC in the region.
The event also saw distinguished academicians sharing the dais with the principal speaker, including Prof. N. Rajmuhan Singh, Former Vice-Chancellor of DMU, Manipur;
Prof. R.K. Narendra Singh, Former Head of the Department of Biostatistics, RIMS, Manipur; and Prof. Ibo Singh, Former Head of the Department of Political Science, Manipur University.
During the event, S. Bhubol, Secretary of the Ojha Sanajaoba Memorial Trust, paid tribute to the legacy of Ojha Naorem Sanajaoba. He highlighted the late professor’s lifelong dedication to human rights advocacy since the early 1960s, as well as his relentless fight against colonialism, racism, fascism, and casteism in the Northeast, one of the most politically volatile regions in India and the world.
Professor Gohain’s lecture shed light on the pressing issue of illegal immigration in the Northeast and the socio-political hurdles in implementing the NRC. The session concluded with a call to address these challenges in a manner that upholds justice and inclusivity while maintaining the delicate socio-cultural fabric of the region.
