Prime Minister Narendra Modi has etched his name in the annals of Indian democracy by becoming India’s longest-serving elected Prime Minister in continuous office. This historic milestone is not merely a matter of statistics; it reflects the faith reposed in his leadership by the people of India through three successive general election victories. It provides an opportunity to assess a decade of governance that has sought to redefine India’s economic, social, strategic, and global trajectory.
A defining characteristic of Prime Minister Modi’s leadership has been his direct and personal connection with the people. Through the monthly Mann Ki Baat programme, he has transformed a simple radio broadcast into a national conversation. Farmers, teachers, students, scientists, sportspersons, entrepreneurs, and ordinary citizens have found a place in these interactions. The programme has inspired campaigns for cleanliness, environmental conservation, the promotion of indigenous products, water preservation, and social responsibility, making citizens active participants in nation-building.
His vision of an economically strong and self-reliant India is embodied in initiatives such as Make in India, Atmanirbhar Bharat, Startup India, and Digital India. India has become one of the world’s leading digital economies, with the Unified Payments Interface – UPI, revolutionizing financial transactions. Direct Benefit Transfers have enhanced transparency and ensured that government assistance reaches beneficiaries directly.
One of the most significant constitutional decisions of his tenure was the abrogation of Article 370 and Article 35A, integrating Jammu and Kashmir fully with the constitutional framework of India. A courageous step indeed. The implementation of the Uniform Civil Code in Uttarakhand has similarly advanced the constitutional vision of equal civil laws for all citizens and stimulated national debate on legal reforms.
National security is another area where Modi’s supporters see a clear advantage. Nehru’s handling of relations with China has often been criticised, particularly the events leading to the 1962 Sino-Indian War. The slogan “Hindi-Chini Bhai Bhai” was followed by a military defeat that exposed India’s strategic vulnerabilities. Modi’s government has adopted a more assertive security posture, exemplified by the surgical strikes following the Uri attack and the Balakot airstrike after the Pulwama attack. The government has also focused on modernising the armed forces and strengthening border infrastructure.
Similarly, the tragic terrorist attack at Pahalgam, which targeted innocent civilians and pilgrims, once again highlighted the persistent challenge of cross-border terrorism. Prime Minister Modi unequivocally declared that those responsible would be pursued and brought to justice. The subsequent security and diplomatic measures reflected India’s uncompromising stand against terrorism and its commitment to protecting its citizens and preserving national unity.
Under Modi’s leadership, India has also undertaken an ambitious programme of defence modernisation. Indigenous defence manufacturing has been encouraged through the Make in India initiative, with increased emphasis on self-reliance in military equipment and technology. Border infrastructure, including roads, tunnels, and strategic connectivity projects, has been significantly strengthened.
Social welfare has remained a cornerstone of his administration. The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana brought millions into the formal banking sector. The Ujjwala Yojana provided clean cooking fuel to economically weaker households, particularly benefiting women. Swachh Bharat transformed sanitation into a nationwide movement, while Jal Jeevan Mission aims to provide safe drinking water to every rural household.
Ayushman Bharat has emerged as one of the world’s largest health assurance schemes, providing financial protection for millions of vulnerable families. The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana has enabled countless families to realise the dream of owning a permanent home.
The COVID-19 pandemic tested nations across the world. India’s response under Prime Minister Modi included the rapid development of indigenous vaccines and the implementation of one of the largest vaccination campaigns in human history. Through the Vaccine Maitri initiative, India extended assistance to many countries, reinforcing its role as a responsible global partner.
Infrastructure development has accelerated at an unprecedented pace. New expressways, highways, railway corridors, airports, metro networks, inland waterways, and modern ports are transforming India’s connectivity and economic landscape. Projects such as Bharatmala and Sagarmala are laying the foundation for sustained economic growth.
On the global stage, Prime Minister Modi has significantly enhanced India’s stature. His leadership during India’s G20 Presidency demonstrated the country’s growing diplomatic influence and its commitment to addressing the concerns of developing nations. India’s successful lunar mission, Chandrayaan-3, and advances in space technology have further strengthened national pride and international recognition.
Women’s empowerment has received focused attention through initiatives promoting financial inclusion, sanitation, healthcare, education, and entrepreneurship. Legislative measures encouraging greater participation of women in governance reflect a broader commitment to gender equity.
The consecration of the Ram Mandir at Ayodhya marked the culmination of a long-standing national aspiration and symbolised the peaceful resolution of a historic issue through constitutional and judicial processes. Programmes such as “Vocal for Local,” “Har Ghar Tiranga,” “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam,” and the promotion of millets as a global nutritional movement demonstrate his ability to combine cultural heritage with developmental objectives.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership style is characterised by decisiveness, accessibility, and an emphasis on public participation. His governance philosophy seeks to transform citizens from beneficiaries into stakeholders in national development.
It would be unfair to dismiss Nehru’s contributions, as he laid the foundations of modern India’s democratic framework and industrial base. Yet, foundations alone cannot sustain a nation. Building upon them and transforming them to meet contemporary challenges is equally important. Modi’s government has sought to do precisely that by modernising infrastructure, expanding digital governance, strengthening national security, and enhancing India’s global influence as per the need of the time.
As he enters this historic phase as India’s longest-serving elected Prime Minister in continuous office, his tenure stands associated with transformative governance, national integration, economic modernisation, technological innovation, social welfare, robust national security, and enhanced global prestige. For millions of Indians, Narendra Modi’s journey represents the aspiration of a confident, self-reliant, and resilient India, prepared to play a leading role in shaping the future of the world while remaining firmly rooted in its civilisational values.
