After its merger with the Indian Union in Oct. 15, 1949, the erstwhile kingdom of Manipur is now a part of the Indian Subcontinent. Controversies regarding the procedure of the merger of Manipur to the Indian Union on its legetimacy are many. Some says it was the will of the majority people of the than erstwhile kingdom which made its way to join the Indian Union. But some have strong point and historical evidences to show that Manipur was not merged but forcibly annexed to the Indian Union. Regarding this, people of the State under the initiative of various civil society organisations had convened a public meeting in September, 1993 and the resolution passed in that meeting is that the annexation of Manipur to the Indian Union was “Constitutionally invalid and illegal”. Terms and conditions to arrive at this resolution were taken as according to legal framework of the Indian constitution. There are many good points in becoming a part of free democratic country. But then there is always a demerit for every good work. It is only a matter to the quantity of how good and how bad. Indian, no doubt is a democratic country and Manipur should be proud of becoming a state of this democratic country. But then after merger there are records that Manipur, when merged to the Indian Union was annexed in the form of a colony. However things have changed now. Manipur has now improved a lot both politically and economically if compare to those days. The decades old hostile insurgency activities has been somehow put under control using various measure which also invites lots of criticisms.
Taking into account of what has been happening in the annals of Manipur history and understanding about the present condition, with the world becoming a global village especially through the advancement of information technology. It is now upto the government to show the world that the worst mistake committed in Sept. 1949 has now turned to be a blessing for the state.
Yeah, we are talking about the strong will and commitment but not merely to garner applause form the common people, who are no fools these days. The report by electronic media about a congress MLA, Dr. R.K. Anand talking taught on the failure of the Indian Government to implement the agreement signed between the erstwhile kingdom and the Indian Union in merger agreement at a time when Assembly session is underway, sees no reason to get applause. Every one knows the 11th session of the 10th Manipur legislative Assembly is underway and instead of taking the issue at the Assembly session why this MLA (a one time champion of the civil society organisation) is inviting media and urging them to highlight some of his speech which perhaps is of no use or in order word which is not effective.
Every one knows Mr. MLA R.K. Anand is a congress MLA, who is in power and why he fails to put up this matter and discuss at the state assembly session instead of acting in front of media. People of Manipur in the present day are no longer fool to be carried away by Insignificant speech even through if it is in the interest of the state. When he got the right plateform to put up all this matter, there is no reason to wonder on why this MLA have to mast valuable time and space of the sate based media.
Noted Human Rights Activists remarked about the MLAs as ‘Mithibong Mitambal’ seems to have some point – at least for some MLAs if not all.
