The Deafening silence of authority amidst corruption and public exploitation

The recent exposés on corruption and malpractice in Manipur paint a grim picture of systemic rot, yet the government’s silence remains deafening. When those in power choose inaction over accountability, they embolden corruption, exploit the common people, and erode public trust in governance. The cases that have surfaced in recent days are not mere allegations; they demand immediate and decisive intervention.
One of the most glaring revelations is the bribery scandal within the Manipur State Power Company Limited (MSPCL), where the Managing Director allegedly took bribes from around 250 employees in exchange for promotions and salary increments. (Imphal Times have concrete evidence) This blatant corruption not only undermines the meritocratic principles of administration but also jeopardizes the efficiency of a critical public service sector. The silence of the government on this issue is unacceptable. Where is the accountability? Should the people of Manipur expect their essential services to be run by individuals who buy their positions rather than earn them through merit?
Equally alarming is the ongoing extortion and harassment at the Imphal Airport parking area. Passengers have repeatedly complained about overcharging and mistreatment by parking attendants, yet the authorities have only offered vague and ineffective responses. If the government cannot regulate a simple parking facility, how can the public trust it to handle larger infrastructural projects or the state’s security? This issue, though seemingly minor, reflects the larger decay in administrative oversight.
The fraudulent job appointment scam is yet another instance of blatant deception thriving under a negligent administration. An organization named Micro Surveillance Record has reportedly issued fake government job appointments, deceiving countless aspirants looking for employment. The Health Directorate of Manipur has distanced itself from the matter, clarifying that these appointments are not government-recognized. But a mere disclaimer is not enough—where are the investigations? What action is being taken against the fraudsters? The fact that such a large-scale job scam could operate unchecked speaks volumes about the lack of governance and regulatory oversight.
What is particularly disturbing is the administration’s sheer indifference to these issues. It is not just about a few corrupt officials or isolated cases of mismanagement—it is about the larger failure of governance. Corruption, fraud, and exploitation are becoming a norm, and the government’s inaction is fostering an environment where impunity thrives.
The people of Manipur deserve better. They deserve a government that listens, investigates, and acts. Authorities must take swift action against those involved in these scandals, enforce stricter monitoring mechanisms, and ensure transparency in public administration. If the government continues to remain silent, it will only solidify the perception that those in power are complicit in these crimes. Accountability must not be a choice—it is a duty.
