With the announcement of the results of the class XII examinations held by various controlling bodies such as the Council of Higher Secondary Education Manipur (COHSEM), Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and Indian School Certificate Examination Results 2015, ISC (Class XII) by the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE)Board, yet another rush for admissions have started. The alacrity with which the students as well as their guardians are leaving no stones unturned to gain admission in reputed institutions which will hopefully help them pave a successful path towards their chosen goals is in fact something to be admired. This particular exercise which has become a regular feature during these times of the year shows that despite the various setbacks and social disturbances unfolding without any let up, the young generation have the positive attitude and the determination to break out of the negative forces trying to tie them down in life.
Yet amidst these encouraging developments, one nagging doubt that has started to emerge as a prominent setback is perhaps the overwhelming preference given to the medical and engineering streams of education. The inexplicable skew in preference may be explained by the trend which started a couple of decades back owing to the fact that the scope of getting gainfully employed or setting up personal practices after completion of any other stream is almost non-existent in the state during those period. With the advent of time and changing circumstances, the mad rush has dwindled, but is yet to undergo substantial changes and efforts needed to be made by one and all to bring about a positive result. The state is in a state of flux at present, and many entrepreneurial talents have started making a name for themselves while setting up profitable businesses and successful enterprises. These radical changes needs to be highlighted and encouraged with favorable assistances and support from the government and public to fuel and sustain it. Students need to be made aware of the avenues that is slowly yet surely opening up for other newer alternatives that can present interesting and fulfilling career options. The opportunities and exciting challenges of playing a part in the workings and functioning of the corporate world, of being able to compete with other big corporations and bigger established business houses and of the possibilities of promoting the innumerable potentials of the state should be made aware by the students.
The state saw an increasing number of career fairs and edu-fest aimed at spreading awareness of the widening avenues of studies being made available for the students. Such fairs and programs needs to be encouraged. On the other hand, the state government and other authorities should display enthusiasm and commitment in shaping an atmosphere conducive to entrepreneurial activities so that the younger generation may be convinced of the endless possibilities and opportunities of various new fields of study and take up novel activities which will benefit the state and the society as a whole.
