PPCM submits memorandum to CM against inclusion of Meitei/Meetei in Scheduled Tribe list

Imphal, Nov. 3: Protection and Preservation Committee Manipur (PPCM) has submitted memorandum to the Chief Minister of Manipur against the inclusion of Meitei/Meetei in the Scheduled Tribe list of the Indian Constitution of India of Thursday. The submission of the memorandum comes amidst pressure to the government from Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee of Meitei/Meitei.

Speaking to media persons today at the office of the PPCM, Convenor Nongthombam Bimol, said that the memorandum is submitted to the government in the backdrop of the campaign by some organization for inclusion of the Meitei/Meetei to Scheduled tribe list.

Justifying on why, the Meitei/Meetei should not be included to the List of Scheduled Tribe list, N. Bimol said that Meitei/Meetei have a history of over 2000 years according to Cheitharol Kumbaba abd even more than that if counted the unwritten history and have been living as a nation. The Meitei Meitei have its civilization which is not less than other civilizations of the world. He said we have our own language, script and own models for construction of its houses besides having our own religion.

“Before the coming of Hindu religion, we the Meitei have our own religion called Sanamahi religion”, Bimol said.

He further added that with all the fact that Meitei/Meetei have its own civilized culture and had been living as a nation so inclusion of the community to the Scheduled tribe List is not justified.

Bimol also said that there are many people who do not want the idea of converting Meitei/Meetei to Scheduled tribe list.

On the other hand the issue of ST is not supported by the SC community and if the Meitei Meetei have been converted into scheduled tribe than they stand to be as Scheduled Caste .

The convenor of the PPCM also said that   already the Hill people had opposed the inclusion of Meetei / Meitei to Scheduled Tribe and acting against such opposition may result a conflict among the different communities.

Prime focus

Times are a changing as everything ought to. Stuffs that were not even dreamt about are becoming devices and gadgets for everyday use. The peace of development and inventions is increasing at a dizzying pace and in an unbelievably complex manner. Every single gene in the human body can be identified, isolated and manipulated. Electricity can be transmitted without any wires or cables. Cars that run for more than a thousand kilometers with only a gallon of fuel is no more a fantasy today. Space travel or space tourism is here. Humans with embedded microchips can now manipulate and control his environment, well almost, as of now. Research and development in every field, being aided by sophisticated computers and robots, have quickened their pace and shortened their observation periods, leading to quicker results. It would not be much off the mark to say that the world as we know today is undergoing a paradigm shift in the way we live our lives. Through these radical changes and developments, one thing has withstood the test of time, proving to be an unseen and unaccounted yet determining factor that could make or mar everything else the human mentality.

The workings of the human mind emotions and feelings that cannot be quantitatively ascertained or expressed as an exactable scientific expression or equation, has remained an enigma a mystery that has not been unraveled till date. Here in lies the genesis of every conflict and differences. Societies created laws and statutes based on the greater good of the citizens, and a system of checks and balances to arbitrate, enforce and amend them. It is a perfect set up on paper. Unfortunately, the better reality is so far removed from the system so envisaged. We, the ordinary citizens are arrested and harassed for raising our voice against what we feel is unjust and wrong even threatened and shot by those who purpose to serve our motherland, whatever form that might take.
The powers that be proclaims to work according to the wishes of the people, while the voice is subdued with threats and intimidation, or worse still, let the voice die out and be forgotten with time. And who are we to turn to for help when the terrorists are the army and police who are drug traffickers who are extortionists who are the influential and powerful? For us mere mortals, complaints and appeals entail the inherent risk of losing limb and life. Is what we are experiencing a replica of the so called jungle law? I’d like to think that a jungle law would be a far better option each one would then have a place in the set up. But then again, we are born equal. A prime minister is as human as a sweeper or a carpenter or a scientist. Each one is doing their bit for the society. The president of India or the Chief Minister of Manipur needs a weaver to weave a piece of fabric which will be sewn into a cloth by a tailor and sold at the market form where it will be brought for his use. We need to accept and embrace one another as our equals. The powerful ones wouldn’t have had a concrete mansion to hider within were it not for the masons and plumbers.

Union Law Minister’s remarks shameful: Popular Front

Imphal, Nov 3: Popular Front of India Chairman E. Abubacker in a statement has said that the remarks made by Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad following the airing of an alleged sting operation by India Today are shameful and utterly unbecoming of his position as union minister.
A statement by Popular Front of India, Manipur said that While the authenticity of the video is yet to be verified, the minister lost no time before publicly attacking Muslim organizations for forced conversions in Kerala. “A man of his position in Government does not need a hardly believable sting operation carried out by individuals with background in either professional or ethical journalism to investigate an organization like Popular Front. Such moves would only create the impression that the minister and government are so desperate for reasons to suppress organizations, that they don’t even mind fabricating it by employing paid media persons and channels.  Popular Front is and always has been an organization that stands by the constitutional values.  Such videos actually are testimonies that there is nothing against us except fabricated evidence allegedly contained in the investigative reports doing the rounds now.  We challenge minister Ravi Shankar Prasad and India today to publish complete unedited video if they have an iota of ethics left”, the statement added.
