Tension at Khongman Mangjil over transformer repair

Tension erupted at Khongman Mangjil in Imphal East after a repaired power transformer was allegedly disconnected shortly after being installed, triggering mobilisation of local residents.

According to local sources, social worker Thingujam Oxford, who recently joined the Congress party, had coordinated the repair of a transformer damaged on August 19 with local residents and the electricity authorities.

The repaired transformer was installed in the area, but an MSPDCL team allegedly disconnected its power supply soon afterwards.

The move angered residents, who gathered at the site and raised the issue through loudspeakers. Another MSPDCL team later arrived, repaired the transformer and restored power supply to the locality.

Addressing a gathering at Oriental Club, Khongman Mangjil, Oxford said the transformer repair should not be politicised or used for political gain. He said residents had been suffering from recurring power disruptions and urged the authorities to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply.

Khongman Zone-I resident RK Jyoti Devi said the transformer had remained non-functional since August 19, causing hardship to residents amid the hot weather. She said the transformer was removed for repairs the following morning and reinstalled in the afternoon, after which electricity officials allegedly disconnected its wiring.

Oxford said he had intervened because he was a resident of the area and could not remain silent while people faced prolonged power cuts.

“Everyone depends on electricity today, so uninterrupted power supply is essential,” he said.

Residents have urged MSPDCL to complete the necessary wiring and ensure stable power supply to prevent further disruption.
