COCOMI condemns injuries to protesters, demands justice for six Liangmai civilians

The Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) has condemned the injuries sustained by protesters, including the wife of one of the six Liangmai civilians allegedly killed at Leilon Vaiphei village in Kangpokpi district, during a protest at Namdilong.

The protest, organised by the Liangmai Naga community on Thursday, demanded justice for the six victims. COCOMI alleged that Manipur Police detained four protesters and released them late at night, describing the action as an attempt to suppress the demand for justice.

The organisation said four seriously injured protesters were undergoing treatment at Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) and urged the authorities to ensure their proper care.

COCOMI questioned the effectiveness of the State and Central governments in ending the violence that began on May 3, 2023, pointing out that the conflict has continued for more than three years despite the deployment of large numbers of Central security personnel.

It questioned the progress of inquiry committees and cases handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), asking how many investigations had resulted in conclusions and justice.

COCOMI also questioned why armed groups operating under Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreements and those outside the framework continued to remain armed.

Calling for decisive action to end the conflict, COCOMI alleged that the governments’ continued failure to resolve the crisis had deepened public frustration and division.

It appealed to elected representatives, political parties and the public to rise above constituency and partisan interests and unite to restore peace and protect the future of Manipur.
