The 80th Independence Day was celebrated across Manipur, with the State-level function held at the 1st Manipur Rifles Parade Ground in Imphal, where Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh hoisted the National Flag and took the salute at a ceremonial march-past by 23 contingents on August 15.
The Chief Minister, in his address, condemned the incident reported from Kangpokpi district yesterday and appealed to all sections of society to rebuild mutual trust and live together peacefully. He said peace was the foundation of development and called for collective efforts towards a peaceful, stable and stronger Manipur.
Highlighting the progress of the country and development initiatives in Manipur, Khemchand referred to infrastructure development, healthcare services in remote areas, Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0, rural employment, agriculture, social welfare and digital governance. He said the Viksit Bharat vision aims to make India a developed, self-reliant and globally competitive nation by 2047.
He informed that 35 internally displaced persons suffering from chronic illnesses had recently received financial assistance of Rs. 1 lakh each, while around 2.4 lakh beneficiaries received Rs. 91 crore under 17 social welfare schemes. He also highlighted the distribution of 477 vehicles to Manipur Police, launch of ERSS-112, establishment of a Manipur Police Museum and setting up of an exclusive Special NIA Court in Thoubal.
The Chief Minister also highlighted initiatives in education, afforestation, anti-drug campaigns, employment and sports, including the planting of 15 lakh saplings under the 77th Van Mahotsav.
Five Special Commando personnel received the Medal of Gallantry, while Khuraijam Shashikanta Singh, MPS, received the President’s Medal for Distinguished Service. Seven personnel were conferred the Medal for Meritorious Service.
The Chief Minister’s Special Citation for Outstanding Devotion to Service was awarded to A. Subhash Singh, IAS, while Dr. Mayengbam Veto Singh, MCS, and R.K. Manbindu, IPS, received Special Rewards for their roles in implementing the UNLF Peace Agreement.
Cultural performances, presentation of a special issue of Manipur Today and awards for police community service, anti-drug campaigns and solid waste management also marked the celebration. Jiribam Municipal Council secured first position among the State’s 27 urban local bodies in solid waste management.
