School students sensitized on Sangai conservation

Sangai First Foundation (SfF), Manipur today organised a one-day School Students’ Sensitization Programme on Sangai Day at the auditorium of Paradise Gardening School (PGS), Chandpur, to create awareness among students about the conservation of the Sangai (Rucervus eldii eldii), Manipur’s State Animal, and its unique habitat.

The programme was attended by SfF President Dr. Khangembam Shamungou, PGS Principal Oinam Irabot, SfF Vice-President Kumam Jugeshor and trustee Tongbram Budhi.

Speaking at the programme, Kumam Jugeshor highlighted the need for environmental education and community participation in conserving the Sangai and Keibul Lamjao National Park.

Delivering the keynote address, Dr. Shamungou spoke on the history and ecological significance of Keibul Lamjao, the world’s only floating national park, and expressed concern over threats to the Sangai’s habitat, including the impact of the Ithai Barrage and degradation of phumdis.

He also explained the significance of Manipur’s State Symbols, including the Sangai, Uningthou tree, Nongin bird and Shirui Lily, and urged collective efforts to conserve the state’s natural heritage. A live demonstration of the State Tree, Uningthou, was also held for students.

Trustee Tongbram Budhi called upon students to play an active role in environmental conservation, while Principal Oinam Irabot appreciated the initiative for enhancing students’ understanding of biodiversity and wildlife conservation.

As part of the programme, a sapling of the State Tree, Uningthou, was planted on the school campus. A spot quiz on Sangai conservation, participated in by 88 students, was also held, with six winners to be felicitated during the 3rd Sangai Day Celebration, 2026.
